Abstract:
In this talk, we shall classify the dynamical action of unitary matrices in ${\rm SU}(p,q)$ using the coefficients of their characteristic polynomial. This generalises earlier work of Goldman for ${\rm SU}(2,1)$ and the classical result for ${\rm SU}(1,1)$, which is conjugate to ${\rm SL}(2,{\mathbb R})$. As geometrical applications, we show how this enables us to classify automorphisms of the complex hyperbolic space and the anti de Sitter space. The talk is based on my joint work with John R. Parker and Shiv Parsad.
