About the Right to Information Act 2005
A citizen has a right to seek such information from a public authority which is held by the public authority or which is held under its control. This right includes inspection of work, documents and records; taking notes, extracts or certified copies of documents or records; and taking certified samples of material held by the public authority or held under the control of the public authority. It is important to note that only such information can be supplied under the Act that is available and existing and is held by the public authority or is held under the control of the public authority. The Public Information Officer is not supposed to create information that is not a part of the record of the public authority. The Public Information Officer is also not required to furnish information which require drawing of inference and/or making of assumptions; or to interpret information; or to solve the problems raised by the applicants; or to furnish replies to hypothetical questions.

Filing of RTI Application
Citizen can sought the information under the RTI Act 2005 through the following:
  • Online Mode: IIT Ropar is receiving RTI applications which can be filed online by the citizens using the portal: https://rtionline.gov.in/
    This is a portal to file RTI applications / first appeals online along with payment gateway. Payment can be made through internet banking of SBI & its associate banks, debit / credit cards of Master / visa and RuPay cards. Through this portal, RTI applications / first appeals can be filed by Indian Citizens for all Ministries / Departments and few other Public Authorities of Central Government.
  • Offline Mode: RTI application shall consists of the following:

    Rs. 10/- by Demand Draft/Banker Cheque/Postal Order in favour of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar to be deposited for each information.
  • Application is to be sent directly to:

    Applicants are requested to pay Fee of Rs 10/- prescribed by the Act. Fee may be paid in the form of Demand Draft/Pay order/IPO in the favour of Registrar, IIT Ropar payable at Ropar
