About R&D
We, along with our colleagues are committed towards making IIT Ropar the R&D powerhouse of the world. R&D section of the institute acts as the conduit for industrial interaction and faculty participation in sponsored research by providing administrative, financial and managerial support for the execution of all research and development projects in the Institute. The primary role is to sense the emerging landscape of various technology domains, prepare and enable the technology roadmap of the institute by interfacing with the industry, various ministries, peer academic institutions, and monitor the execution of the numerous sponsored R&D and consulting activities of the institute.
Research as a theme has always been the center of attention at IIT Ropar. Today, the R&D office has a staff of around 6 maintaining individual accounts of over 100 projects at any given time, processing papers related to purchase, travel, appointment, and salaries.
In its continuous endeavor to reach the peak of academic excellence, IIT Ropar has taken several initiatives such as:
- Nurturing strong links with industry for joint research, technology transfer, and specialized human resource development.
- Encouraging commercialization and application of technologies and inventions.
- Facilitating access to research, expertise and technology databases and selective dissemination of information.
Sponsored Research Projects
Along with teaching and academic research, the Institute gives high priority to research and development projects sponsored by national and international agencies and user organizations. The faculty members of IIT Ropar are actively engaged in various research projects funded by external funding agencies. Since the inception of the institute, the faculty has been attracting research projects from the different funding agencies such as Department of Science and Technology (DST), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST), EPSRC, GCRF, UKIERI, Technology Innovation Hub, INDO-US Science & Technology Forum (IUSSTF). Till date, the Institute has received 264 projects with an outlay of Rs. 214.81 crore. There is a growing trend each year in terms of availing external funding. IIT Ropar is deeply involved in the national level initiatives such as IMPRINT, UAY, SPARC, VAJRA and STARS. Several of our faculty members are directly involved in providing a road map for our country in the domains of energy, healthcare, environmental science and climate change, nanotechnology hardware, advanced materials, etc.Industrial Consultancy Projects
Industrial consultancy is another significant area of activity of the Institute. The nature and extent of the industrial consultancy projects undertaken by the institute is an index of its credibility with the industry. Several faculty members take up industrial consultancy projects from highly reputed organizations. To name a few, there are projects from Max Speciality Films Limited (MSFL), National Project Implementation Unit (NPIU), Cedrus Lifestyle Ltd, Mohan Fibre Products Ltd. , SGF Infra Private Limited, Handtool Industries, Jalandhar, Drish Shoes Ltd, MINT Life Sciences Private Limited, YAMAHA Pvt. LTD, Trimble Navigation Pvt. Ltd., BIO Era Health Care, Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner Punjab, Airef Engineers (P) Ltd., Tech Indus One Services LLP, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited, Dhruv Consultancy Services Ltd, Bharat Electronics Limited, Verisk Analytics India Private Limited and Punjab State Warehouse Corporation, Punjab etc. IIT Ropar saw a surge in consultancy projects which has gone up to Rs. 7.94 crore with 143 projects.
